This was definitely an exciting year for me as a 3D artist. I got a lot of really interesting client projects, managed to start working towards developing some of my own properties and really got to see my skills drastically improve over previous years. The current demo reel is an early preview and will be updatted at the year's end with a few more exciting projects!

2011 - Shot Breakdown

  • Netword "Webster" Rabbit:Everything, created it from a pencil sketch in Maya using ZBrush, The Setup Machine and Shave & Haircut. Tracking and footage was provided by my client, Alexander Film Company
  • Crab:Materials, Rigging, Tracking and Animation. Used SSS and Mental Ray to render and After Effects to composite.
  • Shirtless Man:Everything. Zbrush, Maya, SSS, mental ray, The Setupe Machine.
  • Animals and Props:Mixed responsibilities including animation, rigging, modeling / UV mapping. Created for an Android game using Unity.
  • Weekly Plug & Shameless Plug Media:Everything. Created in After Effects using motion graphics techniques as well as stock footage.
  • Creeper:Everything. Easily the most difficult project I've ever had to undertake, it took me close to a year to complete. No, that is definitely not sarcasm.

This past year was spent doing a lot of research and going back to the basics. I was pre-occupied with learning a lot of tough experiences in running a small business and finding work as a freelancer. Many projects I worked on simply didn't make it into my demo reel (either poor quality or un-related media). While this reel is admittedly weak, to me, it represents a significant gain in pursuing an entrepreneurial career.

2010 - Shot Breakdown

  • TRON: Everything, created for an FXWars Challenge. Sculpted the character in ZBrush, animated and rendered in Maya and compositied in After Effects. The character was based on "Tron Guy", the popular internet meme.
  • Van / Car: Rendering & Animation only. I used stock models to create this animation for a client of mine to demonstrate a new product they are offering.
  • Afro Girl: Everything, created this character for a client who wanted a short animation included as part of a pitch package
  • ClearSCADA: Render, Animation & Effects only. A client animation created to demonstrate key features of a system in a symbolic / metaphorical manner
  • Water Drop / Pour: Everything, except select stock product models. Created to demonstrate key features of a product line.
  • Flash Application: Everything, except small portions of Flash code & stock models. A custom-made flash application marketing a company's product line.

This year was spent learning every single technique I could soak. Rather than practice things individually (because I was also working on a degree at the time) I chose to mash everything I learned into bigger projects. Ultimately, this forced me to learn quickly and this year represents a signficant jump in my understanding and proficiency in the 3D arts.

2009 - Shot Breakdown

  • Athlete Wrestling Python: Everything, sculpted in ZBrush and rendered in Maya. Was created for a Hardcore Modelling Challenge where we had to put a self-portrait on a famous sculpture
  • Tarsier in Hand: Everything, sculpted in ZBrush. Was created for a "3D printing" challenge, entire sculpt had to be a single mesh that could potential be printed
  • Hill Billy Rig: Everything, created as a personal challenge to learn more about rigging in Maya
  • Girl & Wolf: Character modelling, texturing, animation, cloth simulation & rendering. Created as a group project in my senior year of University.

  • Lizard: Everything, but followed tutorial

  • Rage Face: Everything, sculpted in Zbrush, rendered in Maya, tweaked in Photoshop
  • Sketchy: Everything, my first "film". It was created for school in a very short amount of time, and I mostly wanted to experiement with creating a unique style.

This was the first year that I really got into 3D animation. Much of the work presented in this demo reel was student work created for classes. This year was an exciting one for me since everything was new and I was learning by trail and error. I even got to play with motion capture in my first year, which was an amazing experience that really motivated me to learn more!
